The saying, “There is nothing new under the sun” is an endearing quotable that reminds us all that we had to have gotten it from somewhere. That “it” can be an assortment of things or ideas that this world has to offer and have offered in the past. One being certain trends, styles, designs, and even colorways. Brand Jordan has made a sneaker empire simply by making fresh renditions of groundbreaking classics.

Retro 9’s has a unique structure that at a glance can pass for an athletic boot. Due to its demeanor of durability, designers tend to gravitate towards dark bases with light accents. This subtle balance of contrast provides a splash of flash to go with its hiking style silhouette. If you were copping J’s at least a decade ago, you might remember the “Citrus” colorway that releases some years back. Now, a revamped version with a collegiate influence is ready to make its mark on the new generation.

You will immediately notice dark tones dominate this colorway, as the Black and Charcoal combination on the upper is Nubuck leather. Black covered the functional parts of the shoe such as the shoelaces, lace ports, and double-stacked rubber outsoles. Not to mention, the triangular knitted indents near the eye stay gives off a hiking appeal. Charcoal locked in on providing coverage from the heel counter down to the toe box. Within the color is a reflective finish that has somewhat of a sandpaper sparkle to it. Scholastic pride is in full effect with University Gold accents brighten the tongue, inline, sock-liner, and pull tabs. Last but not least, the JUMPMAN on midsole makes the design complete.

The Air Jordan Retro 9 “University Gold” release on January 30, 2021, and retail for $190 USD both in stores and online at DTLR.com

'PE' was an acronym that I never knew but fully understood once it was explained to me as a kid. Player Exclusive shoes usually have special variations of the commercial release. In order to get a pair of PE’s, you must be a professional athlete on contract with a basketball shoe company. Brand Jordan has a legacy list of players who not only had signature shoes but have worn iconic PE colorways on the hardwood. Ray Allen, Mike Bibby, and Eddie Jones are some of the sharpshooters who made these rare colorways desirable to wear.

Behind The Design

Over the years, PE’s are not as exclusive as they once were. Players change their sneakers during the half, let alone per game. The shoes that were intended for NBA use are now being mass-produced for sneakerheads to have their very own piece of history. The Air Jordan 12 “University Gold” is a sunny rendition of a court classic. It is quite difficult to not see the resemblance the shoe has to Gary Payton’s Retro 12 “Away” PE colorway. The luxury black leather upper looks exotic with the pebbled overlay curving to the forefront. Durable rubber outsole with the capitalized ‘JUMPMAN’ printed above the midsole. Speaking of Jumpman, the hi flying logo is placed on the tongue, toe tip, metal eyelet hooks, heel notch, and insoles. 23 is represented properly near the heel stabilizer, with ‘TWO 3’ embroidered stitched on the tongue padding.

The Air Jordan 12 “University Gold” is available Friday, July 24, 2020, in-store and online at DTLR.com
