During the event, we showed up to surprise community members with donations of baby items and groceries, as well as apparel and footwear from DTLR. We also brought volunteers to provide help to anyone that needed it. We then presented a check to the organization to recognize the importance of the work being done in the community.

I’m the CEO and founder of Empify. We are a start-up financial literacy program, based in Philadelphia, that shows adults and children how to build wealth.
Our mission at Empify is to educate, empower, and modify the mindset of every individual, by inspiring them to achieve career, life, and financial success. We have programs for children, middle school, high school, and college students in Atlanta, Philadelphia, and New York.
Over 5,000 students have been impacted by our financial education programs. Our focus is showing students how to save money, make money, and invest money. For adults, we are like the Netflix of finance, as we just launched our app, that gives you access to over 100 hours of financial education tools and resources.
I was born in Philadelphia, and all I wanted to do was make a lot of money and have nice clothes. I never wanted to be an entrepreneur, but I had dreams of working on Wall Street. I went to Howard University, majored in Finance, and had 4 internships, 3 at Wall Street investment banks. I graduated landing my dream career working for one of the biggest banks in the world. Helping individuals who have $25 million or more, manage their money.
After about 8 months of my career, I realized this is something we are using every day in our lives, that is not being taught in the school system. I wanted to take the information that Wall Street and Howard University gave me and give it to people that Wall Street would not talk to.
We want to bring financial education back into our school system by programming in over 100 Schools across this country. Most importantly, we want to put financial education back into the household by showing adults and children how to build wealth together.
]]>Founded by childhood friends, Muhammed Abdul-Hadi and Chef Kurt Evans, Down North Pizza is no ordinary neighborhood pizza joint. It’s one that marries serving top-quality delicious comfort food with the mission of reducing recidivism rates in black communities. Their aim is to help erase employment barriers faced by formerly incarcerated men and women, by providing culinary career opportunities at a fair wage within an equitable workplace.
Executive Chef Michael Carter has been cooking his whole life. Whether it be family reunions, fish fries, or his family's barbeque spot on 52nd Street, their business model is unique because of its honesty. They aim to shine a light on the restaurant industry's backbone, the formerly incarcerated and undocumented workers.
Pizza being a food everyone enjoys was the perfect catalyst to use for the bigger issue at play, which is to talk about the over arching issue of mass incarceration.
What's next for Down North? Everything they do is to better their community. At the top of the list is to build a sustainable community garden across the street from the store. They aim to create a place where their patrons can get fresh produce once they are harvested, build community centers in the Strawberry Mansion area to teach job training skills to the youth, and build a food co-op in the heart of Philadelphia, where people can work and receive memberships on discounted foods.

]]>The last year has been very hard on many people, so we wanted to create a scholarship to help ease some of the financial burden for students that have displayed excellence in academics, had an impact on their local and school communities, and overcome unusual personal or family circumstances.
Our company has a longstanding history of supporting students and HBCUs, so another way we are able to demonstrate that commitment is to do something extra to help provide support for graduating high school seniors who are looking to attend a participating HBCU school full-time in the fall.
We have partnered with Def Jam in support of their new Undisputed roster and in celebration of their 35th Anniversary. We are the first partner for the Def Jam Undisputed campaign, having led our HBCU Tour in 2018 with Def Jam undisputed artists, DaniLeigh, Fetty Luciano, Bernard Jabs and more!
At this event, we drove with the artists (S3nsi, Molly, Lil Brook and TFL Kelvin) for two days through three markets including D.C., VA, Charlotte. Stopped at Howard, VSU and pulled up to CIAA to perform at the band competition
Other highlights included DTLR Radio /Def Jam meet & greets along with prize giveaways at the our booth, hosted Gunna in-store at Westerly Station, and night life events.
Undisputed, a compilation album, drops March 8.
This year, we set our mark at $100K and when the dust settled, we reached our goal with some change to spare!
100% of the profits from sales of the shoe go to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital! The first time in St. Jude’s history!
The inspiration behind this imperative cause is DTLR employee Tremayne Lipscomb Sr.'s superhero son, TJ. TJ was diagnosed with a form of cancer called Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Radiation was not an option for his family, so they were led to a treatment that was offered only as a result of St. Jude’s special research. An uphill battle no doubt, TJ was in for a fight. As a young brave soldier, he fought with ! In 2017, New Balance, alongside our own June Sanders, created a special edition New Balance 530 inspired by TJ and his testimony. The Under Armour Story:
Offering unbeatable support and comfort is just one way to describe Under Armour's longest-tenured tactical boots-- and Pacino "Chino" Braxton agrees.
Chino, a 21-year-old West Baltimore native and motocross athlete, has already overcome great adversity. Today, he is determined to do good and uplift his community, and has recently joined the Under Armour Sportstyle category as a Pioneer.
"It feels good coming from where I grew up to be an influence for the kids and to show them there's another way out," said Chino, "I turned my craft into a lane. If I can do it, they can, too."
His first initiative includes partnering with B360 Baltimore to provide youth with a vision of success and a path forward. The organization utilizes STEM education programming to help fight the cycle of poverty. Chino will donate a customized bike on Charity Network’s Charitybuzz platform, with all proceeds benefitting B360. Chino is featured as the face of two limited-edition colorways of the UA Valsetz – black/metallic silver and metallic silver/black. Pairs are available now for $125 on UA.com and the 25 DTLR locations across the DMV area. Photography for the retail campaign was captured in West Baltimore by heralded Baltimore photographer Devin Allen. We connected with contemporary artist Ron English to serve as a creative ambassador to influence the launch of The New Balance 247 “The Collective.” Ron English is one of the most prolific artists of our time. Coined with the term POPaganda, his work is described as a mash-up of high and low cultural touchstones and has been seen in museums, movies, television and all around the streets.

VILLA and Jordan Brand created A’s for J’s in 2013 to celebrate academic excellence—for every “A” earned in English, math and/or science each marking period, a student receives $25 credit on Jordan merchandise at VILLA store locations. This year, students will also receive a $25 credit if they maintain 90% or higher school attendance per marking period. Throughout the school year, A’s for J’s members are given the opportunity to participate in various educational, personal, and professional development events and programs.Student Profiles
Our students shine so bright in and out of the classrooms that we decided to spotlight a few of them here. We shadowed Nyla, Ameen and Jhazima for the day to witness the afternoon through their perspective and to talk with them about college, their hobbies and their relationship with VILLA.Meet Nyla Davis
Nyla is a Senior at Imhotep Institution Charter High School. She plans to study at Bowie State University as a Business Administration major. Nyla serves as a dedicated achiever in her high school, while tackling her leadership roles on the cheer team, prom committee and mock trial. VILLA: Why is college so important to you? Nyla: I wouldn't know what I would do if college wasn't an option. Attending a university offers great opportunities and is a great accomplishment. VILLA: What is your relationship with VILLA? Nyla: I love the incentives and scholarship opportunities VILLA offers. They really value knowledge and education. This is my 3rd year with A's For J's so education is clearly priority. VILLA: Do you have a favorite Jordan shoe? Nyla: Although I love the Jordan brand, I'm not a big sneakerhead. If I had to choose a favorite shoe, though, it would be the Puma Fenty Creeper.Meet Ameen James
Ameen is a senior at West Philadelphia High School. He plans on attending Hampton University as a Business Major. Though quiet and easygoing, he holds some outstanding hidden talents. Ameen finds passion in music as a singer and a surprisingly good dancer. He showed off his talents during the dance contest at Terminal 3 and stunned us all! But after talking with Ameen one and one, I was not surprised.
VILLA: What do you look forward to most about college?
Ameen: I really want to know more about the music industry-- the music, the business, and everything! There are so many levels to the industry and I just want to be well-versed in all of it!
Meet Jhazima Jefferson
Jhazima is a senior at Kensington Capa and plans to study Theater at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Jhazima or "Jha" as her name-tag stated, has such a dynamic personality, so becoming a theater major is no surprise. She has been acting since the age of 8 and is involved in her school's productions. With her passion for film and culture, she is ready to take the world by storm.
VILLA: Why is the A's For J's Scholarship so important to you?
Jha: VILLA really appreciates a valued education and so do I. I can't wait to go to college! It's all about experiences, networking and opportunities. The more education, the greater the knowledge.
VILLA: Why do you want to become an actor?
Jha: I love acting! I admire Disney films and everything about the culture and art of cinematography.
VILLA: With your love for the arts, would you ever consider musical theater?
Jha: I'm not the greatest singer, but I would not be opposed to it. Being a performer means being well-versed in all fields.
VILLA: So, will you ever come back to NYC to see a Broadway play?
Jha: Absolutley!
